Seerah: The Shepherd’s Path V (RAW notes)

22 Nov

Recap: The battle of Badr, Abu Sufyan had escaped through the coastal routes.

Muslims did not know that abu sufyan had taken the coastal route. Then the messenger of Allah told them the army was coming from Makkah. They were still hoping to meet and overtake the caravan.

Allah (swt) sends glad tidings to the messenger of Allah (swt). This ayah is proof of the authenticity of the Sunnah (8:7)

Why did Rasulullah consult the Muslim army when it came time for battle? He didn’t do anything without making sure his people were in the know.

Rasulullah wanted feedback from the people of Medina, so everyone could be on the same page. In the treaty of Aqabah in the last condition, it was mentioned that Rasulullah would be protected inside Medina, but there was no mention of inside. So Rasulullah wanted to clarify if that protection extended to outside Medina. Did not want any confusion whatsoever.

The Medina people said they gave their word, so bring us wherever you want to bring us, and you will not find one person amongst us who will stay back.

“Indeed, we are a people who are patient in war, and we are a skilled army.” He’s(this sahaba)  telling the messenger of Allah that they’re all with him.

Rasulullah sends out scouts and spies to cover the terrain. Sends out Ali ibn Abi Talib, captures two people. They have come to Badr to get water. They bring the two people to Rasulullah.

Turns out these two people are from the Meccan army. They don’t believe they are from the army, they still think they are from the caravan. The Muslims wanted to believe that they are from the caravan. They beat them until they confess under coercien that they are from the Muslim army.

Rasulullah is very angry at this treatment of the prisoners. Torture of prisoners will get you nowhere. Listen to how the prophet got information from them.

The messenger asked, “How many are you?” They gave vague answers, “A lot.”

They didn’t tell how many people. Did Rasulullah beat them to get the numbers out? No. He asked, “How many camels have you slaughtered today?” “Ten.” Okay, 1,000 people. From the number of camels slaughtered he was able to extrapolate the exact numbers.

So this shows the wisdom and the technique of getting information out without torture. You need to be a little smart.

Rasul goes to the wells of Badr, and asks a man there, “Did you see anyone coming here to get water? Where did they come from?”

Man told him he did see some people. The army is very nearby. Just behind the mountains near the wells of badr.

As Rasulullah is about the leave, the man asks, “Well where are you from?”

Rasulullah, “We’re from the water.”

“Water? Water of what? Water of Iraq?”

What Rasulullah was indicating was, we’re all made from water. So, at the same time, Rasulullah didn’t lie, but he didn’t give away any information either.

Makkan army, at this time, many of them were thinking of going back. One of the kuffar said, we will never look at each other the same, because we will be fighting our own relatives. When we go back to Makkah, we will see someone in the street who killed our son, our uncle. We don’t need to go to Badr, we don’t need to continue. We came for the caravan, and the caravan is safe, we should go back.

When Abu Jahal hears what Utbah has said, he starts to call him a Coward. Are you going to let Hadrami die in vain? He tries to rile up the people, making a big scene out of it. Whoever is not going to continue, they aren’t Makkans. By not fighting they would be unpatriotic. Most of the people in an army, they want to go back, but sometimes it only takes one guy who is very stubborn to ruin the reputation of a whole tribe.

So the Muslims reach the well area, and they stop, and Rasulullah says, we will camp here. Al-hubab ibn Mundir, says, “Oh messenger of Allah, the place that we have chosen to make camp, is this the place tht Allah has ordered you to settle, or is this your own opinion?” He was trying to say, if this is of your own opinion, I think we should move, but if Allah ordered it, then we can stay.

He didn’t think we should stop here, we should move forward. The majority of the wells, we should put in front of us, and the rest, we should fill them up. So the kuffar could not get water.

The Prophet said, “We’re gonna do that then.”

This shows the prophet consulted with his companions. And this shows the importance of consultation. Try to consult with the general public, not just your own personal posse.

Leadership is shura, consultation. In Islam. Makes everyone feel like they are contributing.

So the armies have moved into position. Night. Each knows where the other is.

That night, Allah (swt) sends a couple things to help the believers. Rain falls that night. The area where the Muslims are staying, the land becomes firm for them. The area where the non-Muslim camp is, the southern area, becomes flooded.

So the footing of the Muslims is strengthened. In the morning, when the Muslims set out, the land is firm. The non-Muslims end up marching in mud, very slippery.

Second thing, the Muslims were given deep sleep. Imagine that tomorrow is your big day, there would probably be a million things in your mind. You can’t sleep. Allah gave the Muslims peaceful, deep slumber.

The non-Muslims were very worried, and they probably couldn’t sleep that night. they can’t sleep. Allah (swt) put fear into the non-Muslims. Before the battle even began Allah sent victory by putting fear in the hearts of those who were fighting the Muslims.

Muslims were able to sleep, so they were able to gain a lot of strength in the morning. These are the things that happened at night. Ali said he tried to hold up his sword, but it dropped 19 times, until he finally just fell down and went to sleep.

During that night, Rasulullah made duaa to Allah (swt) for a very,v ery long time. He kept on standing and raising his hands until his Ridah? fell. He stood for so long, that Abu Bakr felt sorry for him. He is supplicating, crying to Allah, that if this group were to be deafeated, Allah would no longer be worshipped. Look, even though Allah has guaranteed the prophet victory, he is still supplicating.

Abu Bakr: “Didn’t Allah already promise us victory?” But that is how the prophet was, and that is how we should be. We put our trust in Allah, we take all the precautionary measures, but when we’re about to do something, continue to supplicate to Allah.

When it rained that night and the drowsiness, Allah tells us about it in Surah al Anfaal.

One companion didn’t get in line, so Rasulullah poked him with his stick to get him in line. The companion said, “You hurt me, O messenger. I want revenge.”

Rasulullah said, “Okay.”

If this were anyone else, any other general, they would probably get shot. Look at the humbleness, on the battlefield. Then sawaal ibn ghazir kisses Rasulullah and hugs him instead. He says, “O messenger of Allah, you see the enemy ahead and in front of us. I wanted the last person that I touch skin to skin to be you, oh messenger.” So this shows the love they have for the messenger.

The Muslims were ordered to line up in rows. He put the archers in the second row, and the front row go down on your knees. No one move, until the army approaches. This tactic was not used in the Arabian peninsula to fight, this was new.

Utbah ibn Rabia, to show he isn’t a coward, he comes forward. Some of the ansaar come forward, but Utbah doesn’t want to fight them, he says, send someone who is of the Mekkans. To show he wasnt afraid to kill people from his own tribe/family etc.

Story: A friend of mine went to buy luggage, and the shopkeeper was like, “I don’t think you can afford this.” The guy is offended, and is like, “Show me the most expensive thing you got!” And he buys the most expensive luggage there. Shopkeeper: Hey, it worked!

So sometimes when you question someones ability, it makes them more defensive and willing to prove themselves.

Manyin the army is related to Rasulullah directly, cousin or uncle.

Shaybah ibn Rabia (kuffar) and Ubaidah ibn al-Harith (sahaba) are in a duel, both wounded. Hamza and Ali both defeated their foes easily, so they carry Ubaidah ibn al-Harith back to the camp, and he died from the wound.

So the companions were lined up in front, and when the battle began, Rasulullah told them not to move. This was very surprising to the non Muslim Arabs.

The old tactic was send out first wave, they fight, they die, send the second wave, they fight, they die. rinse repeat.

If they run to you, you run to them. <– old tactic

So the kuffar are running to the sahabah, and are like, what do they not want to fight? pause in confusion. Suddenly, arrows start flying. Caught them by surprise.

So the arrows, just this surprise tactic, caught the non-Muslims so off guard, that many of them started retreating just frm that, just from the surprise.

“Indeed Allah loves those who fight in his path in rows, as if they are one structure. ”

You will see this tactic in civil war battles, and this was the tactic of the prophet. And because this tactic was very successful, it spread all over the world.

When the battle began, it was very quick, because the non-Muslims were already retreating. And bcause they had muddy feet, and the battle had already begun, Rasulullah grabbed a handful of sand, threw it in the direction of the kuffar. And each particle went into the eyes of all the kuffar. Is it humanly possible to aim all these particles directly into the eyes? This is a miracle of Allah. And of course they were very tired to begin with.

54:45 The multitudes will be defeated and they will turn their backs and flee.

Allah sent his angels as well. Some of the companions saw the heads of the kuffar rolling without any sword touching them. They could distinguish which one was killed by an angel and which were killed by a human. The cut was very clean, and there was a burnt mark.

George Lucas actually got his inspiration for the lightsabers from this, he mentioned it in a documentary. So before Luke Skywalker had lightsabers, the angels had lightsabers.

One person that the sahaba were ordered not the kill, al-Abbas, the uncle of Rasulullah, who had helped them very much.

A companion comes, and brings al-Abbas ibn Abdul-Muttalib, all tied up. al-Abbas said a guy in all white came down and tied him up. The companion was so excited that he brought al-Abbas, but he just delivered him, he didn’t have to do anything.

Iblees also attended. he came in the form of Suraqa ibn Malik. Iblees retreated, jumped into the Red Sea, and cried. Zero chance of victory if the angels were sent down.

Angels were equal to the number of non-Muslims.

Allah only sends help if the Muslims are firm. We will see in the battle of Uhud, that Allah held back the angels, because they were not firm. Even though they were in the beginning, winning.

If you have bad neighbors, console yourself in knowing that Rasulullah had worse neighbors.

What is the ruling on movies like the message? First of all, it is not befitting to make a mockery of someone like Hamza, nor is it befitting you to portray someone like Abu Lahab or Abu Jahal, because you can never be worse than them.

As long as you’re not pretending to be other than yourself, or someone similar to you, in skits and whatnot.

There is a false hadith, division in my ummah are a mercy. It is not a mercy.

Does Allah sends angels now?

So the Muslims captured 70 and killed 70.

There were non-Muslims, and Muslims, but there were no hypocrites yet. Why not? there was still hope that the Quraysh would be victorious. After the battle of Badr, this is when the hypocrites started to show up.

In Makkah, the Muslims were still considered weak, so there was no reason to pretend to be a Muslim. It doesn’t make sense. When the Muslims gained power after the battle of badr, that is when the Muslims really gained strength.

The only way to keep my position, so others would respect me, is to pretend to be Muslim <–this is the mindset of the kuffar now

One of the kuffar pretended to be a Muslim, even though he hated Islam and Muslims. Every friday, before the khutbah, he would tell the people to listen to what the prophet had to say, just to show that he has status and respect. even though what he was saying was not what he believed.

News reached the city, and people were astonished. We couldn’t believe the Muslims with such a small number could defeat such a large army. The Quraysh, with all their armour, and their power, had been defeated. We didn’t believe it until we saw the prisoners being brought into medina.

Among some of the prisoners, Rasulullah ordered some to be executed. One was Uqbah ibn Abi Muayth. Ali was ordered to execute him. When he was about to be killed, Uqbah said, “Oh Muhammad! Who will take care of my children?” Rasulullah: “The hellfire will.”

Remember this is the most staunch enemy, tried to kill him on many occasions, used to throw trash, he was the one who threw the guts and camel fetus on top of Rasulullah. He was a war criminal, and he was made an example.

Annadro? ibn Harith was also executed. He was the one who would tell stories, and shadow him, and make fun of Rasulullah whenever he tried to give dawah.

The main leaders were killed on the battlefield. Abu Jahal was killed. He was one of the main leaders.

In line, in the Muslim line, AbdurRahman ibn Awf, he was put into an area between two young people who had never been in battle. He felt very insecure, he wasn’t sure they could watch his back. You don’t want inexperienced people nex to you.

One of the teenagers asked, “Who is Abu Jahal?”

AbdrRahman: “What do you want with Abu Jahal?”

“I want to kill him.”

The other says, tell me too. Because they were both in competition to see who could kill Abu Jahal.

See that guy on the horse there? That’s him, that’s Abu Jahal. Immediately they both shot like rockets, broke through the line. One of the hit him on the top, the other hits his leg, and he falls down. The banner, the standard, the sgnal that indicates a continuation in fighting, was also shot down. So from the beginning the leader was down and the banner was down.

The best way to defeat any army is to attack the banner. If the banner is up, the army has the signal to continue fighting.

Anyone who took up the banner, was shot down. The most endangered person on the battlefield is the one holding the banner. It’s like having a target on your back. Soon the non-Muslims gave up holding the banner because they kept dying. Then finally the retreated.

So, the two brothers were in argument over who killed ABu Jahal. Rasulullah asked to see the swords. He said, You both struck him. Both brothers had killed Abu Jahal.

Rasulullah: “Who will bring me the body of Abu Jahal?”

Abdullah ibn Masood goes to the battlefield, and finds Abu Jahal still breathing. Abdullah sits on his chest. Abu Jahal sits on his chest. He asks who won. Abdullah says, we did. Abu Jahal, “That’s a very high position for a little shepherd like you.” Abdullah smacks him, and it’s a backthrow to when Abu Jahal slapped him as a child for reciting the Quran.

An ear for an ear, and the head is extra. Abdullah brings the head of Abu Jahal. What goes around comes around.

One of the kuffar, because of what he did, he knows that if found on the battlefield, he would be slaughtered. He finds his friend, AbdurRahman ibn Awf, who is Muslim now, and begs him to take him captive.

Bilal sees him, and says, “That is the head of kufr!” and they are ready to kill him.

AbdurRahman says, Whoa, hey wait, he’s a captive.

Bilal: “If he lives today, then I would want to die.”

That’s how serious it was, that was the leader of Kufr in Makkah.

AbdurRahman ibn Awf tried to stop them from killing him, and was actually stabbed in the leg, but he(insert name) was killed on the battlefield there.

So the Muslims have 70 prisoners? What to do? Several options: kill them, ransom them, or set them free. The prophet consulted with his companions.

Abu Bakr: “We’re a weak state. If we ransom them, we can get some money and build our Muslim state.”

Omar ibn al-Khatab: “We should get rid of all of them, don’t leave a single one alive.”

If you’re helping the non-Muslims to harm Muslims, your actions are speaking louder. Even if you say the shahada, your actions are contradicting your words.

al-Abbas even had to pay, even though he said he was now Muslim, to show that his money was where his mouth was.

Some of the poorer prisoners, they could not afford the ransom, so the ransom was, teach 10 children to read and write.

Most of the poeple in Medina were illiterate, and the people in Mecca were literate. So the education landscape of Medina changed.

one of the prisoners hit a kid who wasn’t learning, and he came crying to the father. the father said, just don’t learn. because then he’ll be nice to you, because he NEEDs you to learn how to read and write. So they were actually tied up, teaching these kids to read and write.

Jihad is dawah. The purpose of jihad is to convey a message. The message, when you try to harm us, we will fight.

The people of medina, they used to cook for the prisoners of medina. and they would bring the good part. they would receive the better food. and this is how they treated them. because prophet ordered them to treat them kindly.

We’re doing it for the sake of Allah alone, even if it’s prisoner. And if you look at how the prisoners were treated, a lot of them became Muslim because of how well they were treated.

Allah (swt) revealed the ayat later on to clarify that the prisoners should have been killed, not ransomed. “It is not appropriate for a prophet to have prisoners until he has established himself firmly on earth.

What’s the reason? WHY kill these prisoners? There is a lesson to be learned here. Wisdom and leadership.

Story: Students in a class, you can’t be mean after you are nice. If you are new, you must establish your authority first. Later on, you have the luxury of being nice.

So, first you must establish authority. When the army thinks, oh yeah sure, i can just ransom myself. they aren’t going to take the muslim army as seriously. when they know that they will be killed, they will take them seriously.

When this ayah was revealed, Rasulullah and Abu Bakr cried and cried. But there is wisdom in everything. So now, they have prisoners, but they can’t go back on it. So this was the best, they ransomed the prisoners, and they learned their lesson. At the same time, they were able to get the money to strengthen, and get the education for the children.

About 20 who could not ransom themselves, there were now over 200 children who could read and write, and when they grew up they taught their children, so the majority of the muslim children were taught by the non-muslim prisoners.

Rich merchants in Medina were the Jews, specifically in Banu Khaynuka. The non-monotheists were mostly farmers.

After the Muslim victory in Badr, the Jewish merchants were worried. They thought the Muslims would be defeated, it was just a phase. They began to show enmity. This is in defiance of the treaty. Rasulullah walksto them, ‘The best thing you could do would be to accept Islam.”

Banu Khaynuka, “Do not be deceived by your victory over those who don’t know how to fight.”

They had agreed to live in peace, and their talking fighting words. There is a lot of tension between the Jews of Banu Khaynuka and the Muslims.

Allah tells Rasulullah in Surah alay Imraan, “Say to the disbelievers, You will be defeated, and you will be gathered in the Hellfire, and indeed a wretched abode it is.”

So, the Jews they know that the Muslims are strong. Some of the Jews were trying to help the Quraysh, even trying to incite the Quraysh into coming back again. The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak, occured in the market place.

Rasulullah never forced them to accept Islam, they still had freedom of religion. What happened in an incident that caused much more tension to occur, there was a woman, a Muslimah, she was buying some jewelry, she was  bending down, to inspect it. So they’re talking to her, flirting, can I see your face, but she ignores them. So she sits down, but one of the shopkeepers, he ties her garment to the necklace, so when she gets up, her awrah is showing, and she screams. When a muslim passing by sees this, he punches the shopkeeper and he kills him. So the Jews see this, and they kill him.

So they sit down, and try to hash out the treaty again. Rasulullah asks the Jews to bring forward the one who killed the Muslim. They refuse to give up the person.

So Rasulullah is left with one option now. Anyone who protects anyone who is sinning, you are going against the treaty, because you have to rbing forward the one who did this. And because of this, the messenger of Allah called the companions, and they laid seige to their fortresses. And they were saying, If they fought the Muslims, they would see who the real men are? They didn’t even fight back. They were all talk. They didn’t even fight back,

So for about two weeks, they were laid seige to by the Muslims, until they finally ran out of food and water and they gave up. Banu Nadir, the were allied with the Khazraj. Banu Khuzaymah were allied with the Aws. The leader of the Khazraj comes to Rasulullah, and he is worried.

When Rasulullah asked the jews of Banu Khaynuka to pay the deeaa, they did, but they should have been killed at uhud

Leader of Khazraj wants to find out if Rasulullah will really kill all of Banu Khaynuka. Khazraj leader says he will not let you kill him (Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Sulood <– Khazraj leader) Who will watch my back? Meaning, if I become your enemy who will watch my back.

Rasulullah finally says take them, you make the choice. There is some narrations that the Prophet ordered them to be expelled. And some narrations say that he was given the option, but most had left anyway.

Ironic, because the Jews would tell the pagan arabs, we (us and the messenger) when he comes, we will fight on his side.

Why? Because the Ansaar had beat them to it. And it was childish behavior. Like, when this thing comes out man, I’m gonna be the first one to have it. But the Ansaar beat the Jews to islam. So the Jews to save face they act all non-chalant, like we don’t care. Since they aren’t the first anymore, they weren’t interested anymore. When someone beat you to it, you start putting it down.

They knew he was a prophet and messenger, but they still refused to follow him.

Rasulullah saw in a dream that he brandished a sword. It broke, he brandished it again, and it was chipped. This was the dream that the messenger of Allah saw. This was around the same time that the non-Muslims were planning to attack again.

Between Badr and Uhud, the caravan routes were being hassled by the Muslims. So they were placing difficulty on the caravans and hurting business in Mecca. After the battle, when Abu Sufyan heard about the great defeat of Badr, the elders made a conviction, that any profit made from this caravan, would go to the army to fund them and send them back to fight the Muslims.

Also, the non-Muslims wanted to repair the reputation, and show their status as a superpower. They brought a large army that not only consisted of Makka, but the surrounded tribes. Lead by Abu Sufyad, Khalid Ibn Walid, and Ikrimah ibn Abu Jahal, and composed of over 3,000 men headed toward medina.

They wanted to finish the Muslims once and for all. The prophet, upon hearing news of their coming, after Jumah, he steps down from the minbar and consults with the companions. All of the companions. Even the weakest could have a word of advice.

He said, “The mekkans are coming with an army. I feel we should have a street war, that way the woman and the children, can help out also and at the same time, we know the streets better, so let them come.”

That is what the prophet wanted to do. Many of the younger companions who didn’t participate in Badr, they were hesitant. We never dd this before. Why would we put our women, our children in danger like this.

Rasul said, “I saw in a dream, and interpreted this dream to mean in the beginning, the army will be victorious. The chip on the sword, someone from my family will be martyred. Putting my hand back in my sword, it means I will be safe in Medina, I should stay in Medina.

Some of the younger companions who were really zealous they had been too young to fight in the battle of badr. they felt they had missed out on an opportunity to show their strength in badr. So they younger ones, they agree to stay in medina. One who agreed, he was a coward. A munafiq. He liked this idea because no one had to know that he wasn’t fighting. Out of the battlefield, everyone would know where he was.

The other companions didn’t like this, they wanted to go out to meet the army.

So the elders agreed, but the vocal minority, the youth, they wanted to out and meet the enemy. So Rasulullah changed his mind because of the youth. The elders tried to tell the youth, don’t be so overzealous. We should fight in the streets in Medina if that is what the prophet said and saw. So the youth agree, they say, okay we’ll tell him we changed his mind.

So Rasulullah puts on his armor, and when he comes back, the youth are now telling them, no, okay rewind.

The Prophet says, “It is not appropriate for a prophet, when he has put on his armor, to then take it off.

The lesson here, “Do not be wishy washy. Do not let people change your mind left and right. The lesson here, if you are a leader, be firm. Be strong. Don’t just waver back and forth because you are just going to cause more commotion.

Story: I’ve got the football in my hands, and the kids all say, oh we changed our minds. we want to play basketball. Still, play football. Because your students need to see that you are strong.

Be firm. People will respect you more for that.

On the way to Uhud, Abdullah Ibn Obay as-solood is very angry. he tells the people that the Prophet listens to only the youngsters. So, why am I gonna go? He doesn’t really want to fight, because he is a coward. So on his way to march, he takes back with him, almost a third of the army. He convinces them to leave. Abdullah ibn Haram, the father of Jafar runs after them. The enemy is on our doorstep, how can you leave your prophet like this?

Allah (swt) reveals: Why are you divided into two groups regarding the hypocrites? Allah has cast them back because they have not earned the honor of fighting for the sake of Allah.

So don’t worry about them, don’t argue with each other conerning them. So the munafiqeen, when the person doesn’t believe in the hereafter, they don’t have that Eman to strengthen them. So the prophet continues on, and just affirms for the Muslims, “Had they marched on with you, they would have only caused problems anyway.”

When you put your army in a position where they cannot retreat, that is the best position. And you put the army in the higher level. Many times, battles are lost because of position. During the battle of gettysburg, the north were on a hill, they had better positioning, and defeated the south. During the battle of Normandy, the Germans were very strong. They had the coast very well fortified. Many people wre killed. Why wre the allied forces able to win? Because they had the ocean at their back. They had nowhere to run. So they fought with all they have, because they have to other option. So when your forces are outnumbered, and their cornered, thats when you get victory. But, when you have places to run, half the forces might escaped.

When you look at how the prophet positioned, it was the perfect position for every battle. During Uhud, the mountain was at their back, and they were on higher ground.

Rasul told the archers to stay on the hill. 50 archers on top. If you have horses headed toward you. You can stop the horseman right away. Pick em off from a distance.

Rasul told them, “Don’t ever leave your position. Even if you see us snatched into pieces by birds. Even if you see us winning, don’t leave your position.”

So in the beginning, the cavalry was made null and void, they could not come close to the battlefield. Everytime they would come close, the archers would pick them off. And they were on a high area, so they had the upper hand.

So, that’s why the prophet emphasized this so much. if you stay in your postion.

In the beginning of the battle, the prophethad ordered the companions to fight pretty much the same way as before. He had a sword. Who will take this sword and fight with it, with it’s right? (truly fight with it) Some of the great companions raised their hands, Ali, Hamza. Put your hand down. Finally, Abu Dajana? was given this sword. and tied the red bandana. this meant he would fight to the death. He started walking the lines very arrogantly. Prophet said, Allah hates that, except in this time. That type of arrogance, this is the only time that Allah loves it.

When the battle began, the first person, who will he attack? The standard bearer. So the Meccans, some of the people in charge before, said, this time we are not going to leave the banner. Everytime someone took it, Abu Dajana took em out. Eight times it took, until finally no one dared to pick up the standard. Killed em every single time.

So, when the battle began, and no one saw the banner, they started retreating already. No one dared to pick it up because it would be suicide. That’s how fierce Abu Dajana was.

At the beginning of the battle a lot of people were crowded in one place. Wahshi was a slave. He was given the condition that he would be given freedom if he was able to kill Hamza.

Wahshi belonged to Jubayr ibn Mu’min? Utbah was killed by Hamza, and of course, the family of Hind was killed a lot, her uncle, her brother, her father, at the beginning when the duel happened at Badr.

Hind kept on reminding Wahshi about what he had to do. He didn’t care about the battle that much, but he wanted Hamza.

His spear hit Hamza, and came through the front of his chest.

Hamza was martyred in this area, and was killed. Wahshi used the same spear later on when he accepted Islam to kill Musaylimah, the false “prophet.”

Wahshi was afraid the Muslims would not accept him, when the Muslims took Mecca, so he fled to Taif. He was thinking of going to Ash-Shaam, or Yemen, because everyone knew he had killed Hamza.

People told him, Oh Wahshi, if you say La illaha illalala and accept Islam, you will not be harmed. So he took the shahada.

Everytime Rasulullah saw Wahshi, he was reminded of his uncle. Sometimes Rasulullah would have tears come down his eyes. When you see me talking, don’t come from the front. Because everytime he saw Wahshi, he could not control his emotions.

So, on the battlefield, when Rasulullah saw his uncle, he had been mutilated by Hind. After Hind found out he had been killed, she cut off his ears, and made jewelry of his nose and ears, and cut out his liver. When Rasulullah saw this, he was very saddened. He made a vow. If I catch the Quraysh again, in another battle, I’m going to mutilate their body worse than what anyone could do. Then Allah revealed the ayah prohibiting mutilation. Rasulullah told every single companion forbidding them from mutilating the bodies of those who have already been killed.

During the battle, when the non-Muslims wee fleeing, remember Rasul had ordered the archers to stay in their places. So on the battlefiled, the spoils of war were being collected. Some of the archers started to come down because they thought the battle was over. only 5 people stayed.

When Khalid ibn Walid saw that the archers had left, the cavalry of Khalid and Ikramah started coming, one from the front, and one from the back. They’re putting the Muslims in a position where now they have to fight two fronts.

So now, the Muslims are chasing the non-Muslims, but they now see the cavalry coming from both sides. When the Muslims started to scatter to cover both areas, they saw this, and they raised the banner back, and started coming back. When the banner is back up , everyone started fighting again.

So now the muslims have to fight two sides, and the main army, and during this battle, they got so close to Prophet. During Badr, they said we started out trying to protect the prophet, but then they found him protecting them, that’s how brave the messenger of Allah was.

So when the prophet saw everything that was going on, he went up on the mountain, and they were chasing the prophet. The enemies who were fleeing have now turned back.

The messenger falls into a pit, so he disappears from the sight of the people. So there are rumors spreading on the battlefield that the messenger was killed. Because they don’t see him anymore. Some of them, when they heard that, many companions just stopped fighting. they just sat down. because of the love for the prophet, their knees would no longer hold their weight. even though they are in the middle of the battlefile.d. it’s like, no matter what you’re doing, if you hear someone you love has been killed, you can’t move. They jus started to cry. becase of their great love for the Prophet.

Anas ibn Nawr ? continued to fight, and looked around and asked Allah, please forgive these companions of mine, by Allah I smell the scent of paradise behind mount uhud. If you are still breathing after today, while the prophet has been killed, you do not deserve to live.

At the end of the battle, The body of Anas was nearly inrecognizable. 80 stab wounds. And he was surrounded by the enemies of Islam. His sister had to come and ID the body by his fingers. that is how unrecognizable he was.

Mus’ab ibn Umayr carried the banner. He did not want to drop the banner, because if he had, the Muslims would have retreated. When one arm was chopped, he held it with the other, when the other arm was chopped he held it with the stubs of his arms. He had to hold it up. As long as he could, until he was struck. Then Ali took the Liwaa, the banner, and continued to fight.

Musab ibn Umayr, the majority of the Muslims accepted Islam because of him. remember, he was a rich sort of guy, very popular, everyone knew him, he was the head of the youth. he had everything. When he accepted Islam, he dropped all of that.

When they tried to bury Musab ibn Umayr, they didn’t even have enough cloth to cover him with. He lived a very simple life and gave it all for the sake of Allah.

one day uthman ibn awf was fasting, and his wife brought him food, and he started crying, because he remembered the day of uhud. we have been given the goodness of this life, but we have not maybe been given the goodness of the next.

Musab ibn Umayr, they tried to cover his feet, and his head would show. they tried to cover his head, and his feet would show.

During this battle, the prophet had fallen, and when he got up, a companion announced that the prophet is still alive. The prophet told him to be quiet, because some of the non-Muslims could have heard and wold have come straight to that area.

Sa’d ibn Abi Waqas was also there. Abu Dujana, when he saw this happening, he tried to come back to protect the prophet.

They hit his shoulders, and broke some of his teeth. he was injured very severely, that when it was time to pray, he prayed sitting down, and when he got up , he fell twice. One of the times, many of the companions were injured, or martyred. There were some women, one of which was Nusaybah bin Ka’af. She was there next to the prophet, when she saw that he was in danger, she grabbed the sword and started fighting on his behalf.

When Rasulullah spoke about the day of Uhud, he looked to the left, to the right, to the back, she was there, until she finally was also struck in the shoulder. And so she took the sword to also protect the prophet, though she would usually turn to the wounded.

the messenger, when he was injured, he said, “How can a people be successful, those who cut the face of their prophets, and break his teeth, and he’s calling them to Allah, and they’re doing this?”

Allah swt revealed: It is not for thee to decide whether Allah has mercy upon them or not, for they are wrong doers. Meaning, it is not your decision whether Allah guides them or not. What you, Oh Muhammad must do, is call people to the way.

After this ayah was revealed, he asked, “Oh Allah, forgive my people, for they have no knowledge.” so now Rasulullah is asking forgiveness.

First of all, sometimes trial and tribulations will come. Because Allah wants to test us, to see who is really truthful.

One of the pos. outcomes, the truth came out about the munafiqoon. It was clear who was a true Muslim, and who wasn’t. So in times of trial and tribulation, you see who the true Muslims are.

When Abdullah ibn Obayy ibn Sulood, he gets up for his usual, “pep talk” before the jumaah. But everyone tells him to just sit down, we know who you are now. But at the time when it was most crucial, they told him to just be quiet and sit down.

Also, in this battle, we learned a couple of things related to how sins affect the battle. Here, the Muslims were victorious.

Also, the dangers of following the dunya. The companions who came down the mountain at uhud, they were after the spoils of war.

“Amongst you are those who want the dunya, and those who want the akhira” and so it shows the danger of the dunya.

The dunya is lucious and sweet. Allah puts you in this dunya, in this world, to test you. Fear this world, and fear women also. Means, take care of them carefully. Because, the first trials and tribulations came because of the woman. What is means is that, the woman is someone who should be honored and protected. If you don’t keep the women in your family strong, that will be the beginning of the corruption in your society.

The first fitna, in Bani Israeel, were because of the women, because they did not take care of the woman. the woman first of all, is half the Ummah, and gives birth to the other half. Any society, if you want to corrupt society, you corrupt the woman first. And from that time, that is where the corruption begins. If the women are strong, then the whole society is strong.

The first trial and first pitfall was with the women, that was the first domino. Make sure the women are strong, and you’ll be okay. Make sure your mothers, daughters, and wives are strong in deen, and the rest will be strong. Take care of your family first.

The dangers of the dunya. remember, the Aws had all accepted Islam, except for one, Ushayram. And he is the martyr who got Jannah without saying a single prayer, because he died in a state of Islam even though he lived in a state of kufr.

Salih al-Muadil: used to make the adhan for the main masjid in his area for over 40 years. known for his piety and righteousness. one day he got up on the rooftop to make the adhan, saw a woman, christian woman, and he fell in love with her. she said, oh Salih, what is this treachery and deception? There is no way my father would allow me to marry you, you are Muslim and I am Christian. He said what would I have to do to marry you? Be Christian, eat pork, drink wine. Now, I want you to go to the roof, and wait for my father. Now he is drunk, and he dies in a state of kufr. When the father comes back, and sees him. She tells him the story, so they took the body, and tossed it in the street. they think it’s a murder.

The father explains the story. The Muslims didn’t bury him, they put him in the desert, because he was no longer considered  a Muslim.

A duaa we should make all the time. “O the changer of the heart, keep my heart firm upon your religion. and keep my heart firm in Islam”

Khalid ibn Walid calls out for Rasulullah on the battlefield, and then Abu Bakr, and gets no answer. Maybe they’re all dead, he thinks.

Omar ibn al-Khattab calls out, We are still alive to kill you another day.

Abu Sufyan says, “This is revenge for the battle of Badr.We have Uzza and you don’t!”

Rasulullah tells Omar to respond, “We have a protector and you have no protector.”

Omar also tells him that it is not the same exchange. Those who you killed are in Jannah and those who we killed are in Jahannam.

In Uhud, 70 Muslims were martyred. It was so much, that there would be 3 to the grave. They would ask, who had memorized more of the quran, so they would be put in the front. Any of the companions who asked, they all knew how much each other had memorized.

Look at your brother and sister. Do you know how much they have memorized? We have left this. When we come to the masjid, we don’t recite the Quran with each other. This is how the companions were. They used to learn from each other. Otherwise, how would they have known who memorized more.

This was also a great lesson, a trial and tribulation. Allah tests those he loves.

The Quraysh after this battle felt they had regained their status. they had new hope that maybe they could defeat these Muslims.

There was a group from Najd. They came to the messenger of Allah. They didn’t accept islam, but, at the same time, They told the prophet (saw) that they wanted the messenger to send them scholars to teach them about Islam

Abu Ghura, (his kunya, nickname) came from Najd. So the prophet said, he dind’t feel comfortable sending the companions to Najd, he didn’t trust them. But Abu Ghura gave his word.

So Rasulullah sent 70 of the scholars and reciters of the Quran, he sent them to call people to Islam. On the way, they were ambushed. 68 were killed, and only 1 escaped, because he feigned death. There were two others who came later on, one was killed, and one was released, because he was, he had somebody who owed his mother a slave. So he released him. Amer ibn al-Hurayfa (?) was seen being raised and washed heart by the angels.

When the spear penetrated Haram ibn Milhan’s body, he saw the blood and said, “Allahu Akbar! By the Lord of al-Ka’aba I have won!”

The goal is not how much quran you memorize, the goal is spending that time with the quran and learning from it. it won’t be easy, sometimes it will be dangerous, and there will be lives that will be lost.

The equivalent of this was like, nowadays, all the great speakers of the world, all the scholars, would all be killed. how would that shake the Ummah? If all the great scholars were in one place, and this happened. these are not normal people, these are the scholars. All of the ones who were slain were scholars.

And this is why Rasulullah, for a whole month made duaa against the people who killed the 70 scholars. Qunoot, after every prayer, done when there is a calamity that has afflicted the Ummah, so that you will make the people in the masjid know what is going on. This is how you bring awareness to the people. Any calamity or natural disaster, hurricane, earthquake, war, and you want and need to wake up the people, do duaa qunoot. remind the people.

Banu Nadir plans to assisinate the Prophet, Jibreel tells him what they are doing.

Prophet goes back, puts on his armour, tells the sahabah to put on their armor, and they go to banu nadir. They also gave away info to the quraysh, telling them to come back and finish them off once and for all. the prophet tried to give them a chance, but they already broke the treaty.

Laid seige to Banu Nadir for about 2 weeks also. so they gave in, they gave up.

Three options, kill, free, or ransom. The prophet was very lenient to them. He said, just leave, take what you want, and leave your weapons, and go.

Settled in the outskirts of Medina, expelled because they tried to kill the prophet.

They did something else also, they had tried to assisinate him before that.

They had had a debate, the loser would have to follow the religion of the winner. they didn’t really want the debate, they wanted to assinate by hiding daggers in the cloaks of the rabbis. 30 rabbis, 30 muslims, too many muslims/jews, just too many. They sent 5 instead.

a woman overheard that the plan was to assisinate the prophet, so she told her brother, wihtout realizing that her brother had accepted Islam. When her brother heard about this he went straight to the Prophet. the prophet cancelled the debate.

Now, with this incident, this was the 3 strikes you’re out. This is why they laid seige to Banu Nadir and they were forced to leave.

The prophet had heard something else. The tribes of Banu Mustaliq, and  Khaza’ah (Surahtul Hasr, the Banu Nadir tried to take everything, even the doors. Poor camels. Everything they left behind, they tried to destroy. But, they were kicked out.) they were motivated and inspired, and they wanted to gather an army and go in and destroy the Muslims.

But these were just rumors, so the prophet sent buraydah, whose tribe accepted islam on the hijrah, from the Aslam tribe. Buraydah was sent, pretending to be part of the people going to provide troops to to attack medina. then he finds out they are serious, goes back and confirms. They are planning to gather a force.

Rasulullah stops them in the planning stages. Gathered the army to go to bani Mustaliq. They went, and they were able to surprise them. They captured over 700 men. They killed just a few, and captured 700 total, men and women.

they had 1000s of camels also. This was a surprise attack, they were in the planning stages and the prophet has already captured them.

Amongst them, they have Juwaria. This is the daughter of the cheiftan of their tribe. When you capture someone in war, what do you do with them? The men usually, you kill them. Sometimes, they wouldn’t, depending on what you did. In Islam, what is slavery? Slavery in Islam is a form of Dawaah. You cannot free them until they become Muslim, because then you’ve done your job. At the time, there were no big penitentiaries. Your slaves were the prisoners, you were the penitentiary. If he, your slave, hasn’t accepted islam, you couldn’t free them. You don’t get the reward of freeing  a slave unless they are Muslim slaves. A young slave girl was asked, wehre is Allah? She pointed up. The Messenger ordered her owner to free her, because she was a believer.

On the way back from Bani Mustaliq, Abdulluah ibn Ubayy as-sudood wanted to start something. he was always trying to start something.

He wanted to cause tribal friction and problems. And he was trying to cause problems between the muhajireen and the ansaar. So the prophet, seeing that there was tension because of this, he continued to make the march. They marched for two days without resting. When you’re tired you don’t wanna fight.

The prophet mentioned a couple of hadith, one of the companions saw some people boasting about their tribe. And the only time you can be vulgar is when you’re denouncing tribalism. Dont’ call for tribalism, except for the way of Allah (swt)

An incident that happened with Aisha (ra), when she lost her necklace.

When you speak about a person’s chastity, a woman can stay awake at night for a whole month worrying what people think about her, because it’s one of the most precious things to her.

When you are put in a position where someone is doubting your honor? know that Rasulullah went through the same thing.

Thinking about this sometimes can console you also. Aisha didn’t even know what was going on. The last person to hear about these things is usually the person about whom the rumors are being spread.

Aisha is very sad about the rumors being spread, she could not sleep and eat. She cried until there were no more tears left in her eyes. Until finally, I realized one thing, that in the end, no matter who you are, the only person who you really have is Allah (swt). It made her stronger, it made her realize you put your trust in Allah (swt). The Prophet (saw) believed her, but it put him in a difficult position. When you are speaking about the honor of the prophet’s wife, you are reflecting the honor of the prophet himself. This also proves again the authenticity of the Quran, because the Prophet could have said, here is the ayah proving her innocence, tada. Aisha (ra) never even thought she was worthy enough to have an ayah revealed on her behalf.

The ayah is revealed, “Verily! Those who brought forth the slander (against Aishah) are a group among you.”

Abu Ayub is approached by his wife, have you heard what they are saying about Aisha?

Abu Ayub immediately defends Aisha, and tells his wife that she is better than you. this is how the believers are, they defend the other muslim. don’t fall for the tricks of the munafiqoon. So the prophet ordered the munafiqoon to be given 80 lashes.

Abdullah ibn Ubayy as-solool never actually said the lie, he just planted the poison.

So he didn’t get lashed.

Cannot let Muhammad continue in this way, the meccans gathered the largest force, a confederacy, of over 10,000 men, wanted to end the Muslims once and for all. Also allied with Banu Najar.

Banu Najar didn’t actually like to fight, got others to fight for them. they got other tribes to fight for them.

Jawaria complained to the prophet, that she didn’t like how she was being treated, so Rasulullah married her instead. The whole tribe accepted islam because of that, her tribe.

The father of Jawaria comes, and he accepted Islam also. And her father.

Prophet offered that she could return to her father. He gave her the option. Jaweria, is that even an option, of course I still want to be your wife!

Rasulullah asks what should we do in the face of this.

Salman al-Farisi said, in Persia, when we were outnumbered, we would dig a trench around our city. Rasulullah thought this was a very good idea. So he ordered the trench to be dig immediately. Didn’t have to be all around, because there are natural barriers.

Some areas are covered with date trees, difficult for the army to go through. So they couldn’t come except for certain areas. But still, a very large task to dig around. about 5 – 9,000 ft. and 9 ft deep 7 ft wide.

Everyone in Medina had to dig. Once you start this, the city comes to a standstill. This continues, 2 weeks to about a month. In either case, the trench was dug, and these were very difficult times. While he was digging, he was the strongest one. They faced a lot of difficulties, because they had very little food, and some had a few dates here and there. Jaabir, seeing the prophet so hungry, one day he had to put a boulder on his stomach. just to give that full feeling. so Jaabir, he went home, and he had a small sheep or goat, and he ordered his wife to prepare some food. They slaughtered the lamb, and prepared the food. He quietly told the prophet that there was food for about 10 people. and he ended up calling over 1,000 people to eat.

So, it’s in a pot, and Rasulullah is taking it out for everyone. And they are stunned. Because the food never ran out. And these are some of the miracles of the time of Rasulullah.

Whenever you need something, just buy it, and Allah will always give you more iA. Allah will always give you enough.

the limitation to the duff is for the men and women both. Difference between fornication and adultery is the use of the duff. Words of poetry are permissible as long as they are good.

As long as it has good words, and not lead someone to go to haraam. iA it’s permissible.

When Rasulullah was in the difficult state where they don’t know what’s going to happen. It’s the equivalent of having the whole world trying to attack you.

When they found a rock they couldnt break, they would call the prophet to break it. He would break it and say, “They Keys of Shaam are mine, Persia is mine” what else gives people hope? think of the imminent victory.

Make people look ahead, stay hopeful, stay optimistic. You know, when you’re watching news, realize, we need to be patient, we need to be better, but insha Allah we will get the imminent victory.

Sometimes when you hear something, you know this is not real. it just doesn’t sound right.

If every copy of the Quran were to be destroyed, immediately it would be written again because it is in the minds and hearts of millions of Muslims around the world.

If a person knows clearly what is wrong and what is right, they should avoid it.

So the prophet (SAW) ordered the digging of the trench.

The munafiqoon, when the promise of victory is given, the munafiqoon say, this is nothing but delusions.

So the trench made an effective barrier, if they go into the trench, they are stuck. When you have guerilla warfare, snipers, you don’t need too many. they don’t really see where they are coming from, you can keep a lot of people back with only a few people. So now the non-Muslims have over10,000

Banu Nadhir, they go to Banu Khuraybah (?) and tell them, the army that is coming now, they are so large, they will eventually be victorious. If you do not switch allegiance, you will also be crushed.

So, they send the cavalry to the fortress of the trench. All the women, and the children, and the elderly in one fortress. Banu Khuraybah, they try to attack the fortress. They send people to the fortress, and there are no men, except for hassan ibn…? his hands were paralyzed. he was the poet, he was the CNN of the prophet. the thing with poetry, it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, people will believe it.

Saffiya took the sword herself, and chopped the head off of the man who tried to infiltrate the tower. She throws out the head, and then the Banu Khuraybah run away because they don’t know how many more people are inside. So, protecting madina became difficult.

one day, the attacks were so continuous, the prophet was not able to pray asr in time. Omar ibn al-Khattab, I was barely able to pray asr in time. May Allah fill the graves of those who have distracted us from Asr prayer. So the prophet prayers Asr, Maghrib, and then later on he prayed Isha. Shows that Rasulullah still kept the same order.

These were very difficult times for the prophet and the companions. Remember, they had been digging for almost a month, and now they are under seige for almos two months. it’s a very difficult time for the Muslims in medina.

Allah (swt) sends them some help in the form of Nu’aim ibn Mas’ood. He is attacking the Muslims, but Islam enters his heart. He is one of the generals. He comes to the prophet, and says, “Oh messenger of Allah, I have accepted Islam.”

war is deception. this is one place where lying is permissible. also, We can lie to our spouse when it comes to praise, even when you don’t believe it, you can still say it. you can say the same thing about your husband.

So, Banu Khuraybah is causing a lot of problems, because they can attack from the inside and the outside. So Nu’aym goes to them and tells them that they want them to kill 30 of your men to prove your sincerity in trying to renew the treaty. So Banu Khuraybah thinks that the Quraysh are going to leave, so they want 30 men. The Quraysh are like, hail no.

The attacks die down a bit, because there is distrust in the ranks of the enemies.

Strong windstorm comes, blows the tents away, can’t light any fire so they end up packing up and leaving. In the morning, Rasulullah sends Hudayfah (?) to check out the camp, but everyone in the morning is gone.

The prophet is tired, the companions are tired. They go home, they are ready to rest, and they are ready to take off their armour. Jibreel comes, and says, “You have taken off your armor, but we have not taken off our armor.” Go to Banu Khuraybah now.

They have commited treachery, so they go to Banu Khuraybah. Don’t pray Asr until you reach Banu Khuraybah, because it’s time to go to them.

So the prophet goes to Banu Khuraybah, says if you accept Islam, then you are all free. They say we live by the Torah, we die by the Torah. When they gave in, they said, –Rasulullah asked them what he should do–why don’t you allow Sa’id ibn Muaad to come? He used to be allied with Banu Khuraybah. We will take his ruling. They used to be allied with the Aws.

he was already injured, so he did not attend the whole siege. He told them to stand when Said ibn Muaad came. Why did he say stand for Said, but didn’t allow it for Prophet?

The difference is, this is stand to your leader, someone you haven’t seen in a long time. You don’t have people stand up every single time someone walks in.

What was his ruling? My ruling upon these people, is that we should kill every male who has reached the age of puberty. And the women and children should be enslaved. The Orientalists would say, Look at Muhammad, he killed 300 – 400 Jews in one day.

But look at what Banu Khuraybah did, the act of treachery. But if you look at the Torah, that is what they did. They only applied the ruling in the Torah against them. So that’s what they did. That’s the ruling for treachery in their own books. You don’t believe your own books.

Break for maghrib…

Should Muslims participate in the political process? Yes, if you can be helpful.

Judged on a case by case basis. If it’s just you, a desert, and a bottle of wine, sure, you can drink it. but that’s only under extreme circumstances.

autopsies, only permissible in extreme cases

In the 6th year, The muslims want to make umrah.

The ka’aba is not preventable territory, they can’t prevent people from making the rituals of hajj. The sanctity of Makka should be respected, even if you’re at war with someone.

On that premise, the prophet gathered 1400 companions to make umrah.

At Zhul Hudayfa? they put in ihram.

The meccans hear about the Muslims, and put on their leopard skins. symbolic of war. Muslim passports revoked.

Rasulullah is informed of this. Consulted with companions.

1st op: If they don’t allow us to go in, and want a fight, we will fight. So now, both armies are headed toward another battle.

2nd op: Oh messenger of Allah, we intended to make umrah, not fight. let’s continue with the same intentions.

Abu Bakr: Let’s change course, and avoid conflict. So they change course as not to meet with the Makkan army.

This road has no water. But Rasulullah has water from the tips of his finger tips? another miracle

The same course that prevented the elephant from entering Makkah, this camel is not moving because of this also. Rasul’s camel refused to move when they got near Makkah.

So, war has eaten the Meccans up, because the caravan routes had been impeded. The economy of Makkah had crashed because of war (sound familiar?)

So Rasul sends a delegate, they don’t want to fight, they just want to make umrah. First they suggest Omar, Omar suggests Uthman ibn Affan.

Everyone misses Makkah. 6 years, they haven’t seen Makkah. A lot of companions were very anxious to see their hometown, the muhajireen. So they send in Uthman ibn Affan.

He goes in, and stays there for a very long time. Rumors are spreading in the Muslim camp that Uthman is killed. In the Muslim camp, everyone is saying Uthman is killed. Spread like wildfire.

Prophet gathers the companions. If they’re going to kill the best of us, then we pledge to fight to the death. And all the people who took this pledge under the tree, they are promised paradise.

There are more than the famous 10 sahaba who were promised paradise.

So they are ready to fight, and then Uthman ibn Affan shows up.

Someone named Urud? tries to make fun of the prophet’s companions, tries to tug his beard, Abu Bakr says something vulgar out of character with his nature because of his extreme anger.

Sohail ibn Amr comes, and Rasulullah says, “Ease has come.” The Quraysh are willing to negotiate now.

Prophet tells Ali to write down the treaty. Starting with Bismillah. Sohail says, no, start with Bismikallahuma. So he’s tryna make it difficult.

Sohail says, do not write Rasulullah, write Mohammad ibn Abdullah. Ali is like, man this guy is being a pain. Ali doesn’t want to erase Rasulullah, because he loves the prophet so much. Ali ibn Abi Talib refused to erase Rasulullah, so Rasulullah erased it himself, asked where it was and rubbed it out.

Now, all of a sudden why are the makkans changing things? Other people who are at war with the Quraysh can come in, but they are making up all these laws and putting down rules and regulations just for the Muslims.

Why did the Quraysh agree to 10 years? To recover the economy, open up the trade caravan routes. This was a recession/depression type year. The only way this could happen if there is no war.

Where did the Muslim benefit? In a min…

4th condition: If anyone from the Muslim go back to the Quraysh, then he should not be sent back. And likewise with the Muslims. This peace treaty is not going to be between the Quraysh and the uslims only. This is between those allied with the Quraysh and those allied with the Muslims as well. The people will follow, because everyone respects the Quraysh.

When the Muslims heard this, they were in awe. How can these terms be?

After this treaty, the son of Sohail take shahada. He refuses to let Abu Jandal, his son, join them. Abu Jandal escapes from his parents, goes to medina, and still rasulullah won’t take him because the treaty had not yet been signed when he took his shahada?

Rasulullah tell the people that we won’t go for umrah this year, and the people won’t listen to him, and everyone is just in disbelief.

Rasulullah tells Umm Salamah that the people aren’t listening to him.

Umm Salamah: O messenger of Allah, I want you to go out there one more time, shave your head, and other people will follow.

Allah (swt): Indeed, Allah has given you a clear victory.

Omar ibn al-Khatab: What victory is this?

The victory of peace. The Muslims are now free to make dawaah. Remember, before it was dangerous to make dawaah. And this shows that Islam can prosper in peace, not in war. When there is peace, it is easier to make dawaah. We know that Islam prospers in peacetime, not war.

In these few months following the treaty, so many eople accept Islam. This is because Rasulullah can send Daees without worrying about being killed.

Some of the women accepted Islam, and the Quraysh were angry because the treaty specifically said men.

Some people who accepted Islam, they could stay in Mecca, they couldn’t stay i n medina, so the new Muslims would stick to the coastal routes and raid the caravans, until the Quraysh were begging them to take the new Muslims. So all these clauses that the kuffar stuck in, they became null and void.

The Najashi, he accepted islam, and passed away in the 9th year of hijrah.

Rasulullah said, a very righteous king has passed away, so they prayed janazah on the king. Because there are no Muslims there to pray Janazah for him.

If someone already prayed for him, you dont’ need to pray for him.

If you are in a state of najis , you can hold a mixed quran (quran and translation)

in 17 months, something happened. 17 months after the treaty. Banu Bakrin joined Makkah. Any group can ally with goup. Khuza’ah allied themselves with the Muslims.

one dark night, Banu Bakrin, with the help of the Quraysh, they attacked the Khuza’ah tribe at the well of Watir (?)

Khuza’ah, some of them, they ran to the ka’aba, and some were slaughtered even in front of the kabah. over 30 were massacred. This is of course, this is a terrorist attack. So, Khuza’ah, they went to the prophet (saw) and informed him of what happened.

Of course, this is a breach in the treaty of hudaybiyah. Banu Bakrin, with the help of the Quraysh, they killed them.

This is the context in which the verse of “Kill them wherever you find them.”

When george bush said that we will kill the perpetrators of the 911 attack, smote them out of their caves, kill them wherever we find them, did anyone call him a terrorist? no, because it’s justifiable in certain cases. because this is an act of terror.

So even despite this, the prophet STILL gave the Quraysh a chance. He said, if they are willing to pay blood money, we will be willing to negotiate. The Quraysh said, we refuse to pay a single camel.

The prophet immediately started preparing, but he didn’t let anyone know. He sent his troops to the north. Abu Sufyan came, because he wanted to negotiate. They were reflecting over the terms, he wanted to renew the peace treaty, but it was too late. Rasul did not let Abu Sufyan know that there was an attack. So the troops were sent away, so as not to arouse suspicion. Abu Sufyan, in medina, had already accepted Islam in his heart. But he didn’t want to admit it just yet, he went back to Mecca to take care of business

And now, in 17 months of peace, from 1400 to 10,000 muslims. This is because Islam prospers in peace.

When Rasul was about to attack, hatib ibn abi batta sent a letter to mecca with a woman, to warn the people that the Muslims were attacking. Rasul sent the companions to go after this letter. They found the woman, and after some persuasion, she gave it to Ali.

Omar asked Rasul: Let me chop his head off, please.

Rasul wanted to hear him out. Hatib said his family was very weak, not in good standing, he wanted to make sure that his family would have some status and people would be like, yeah man that’s hatibs’ family right there, he saved us!

Rasul said Hatib was forgiven, because he had fought in badr, and he was doing it to try to protect his family. The sahaba who were promised paradise, they became stronger muslims.

So Rasulullah, with 10,000 people, started on to Makkah. They came across 2 people, Abu Sufyan, and…

So the Makkans are in no position to fight, because their leader Abu Sufyan has entered islam.

Rasulullah announces, there will be no bloodshed in the haram. Whoever goes to the house of Abu Sufyan will be safe.

What is the benefit of mentioning ABu Sufyan’s house? To raise his position. Because if Abu Sufyan tells the people to accept Islam, thye will listen.

So when the prophet entered Makkah, he told bilal to get on top of the Kabaah after destroying all 360 idols. In the streets of Makkah Bilal started reciting the adhan. Some children looked up, and thought, “What is that black man doing up there?” this shows how there was racism in makkah and how islam elevated and equalized the status of people regardless of race.

Rasulullah says, “You all are free.” In the same way that the brothers of Prophet Yusuf tried to kill him, the same way Rasulullah forgives the Makkans.

There are some new Muslims, who now when seeing a black man on top of the Ka’aba, they shake their head saying, I’m glad my father passed away before this. But Rasulullah wanted to use this as an example, that no one is above another except in deeds.

How long did we have to wait in America before something like this was mentioned. Almost 1300 years. Another thing we must understand, the change that happened in Makkah. The prophet, (saw) changed many things. In the beginning, women and blacks could not vote. Other people from different groups, diff nationalities and groups, many people had to struggle for their rights.

Somebody along the way,in every civil right struggle, said, “That’s wrong, that’s not right, even if thousands of people think so.” And so they start to go through a struggle. A lot of money was put into this, to change people’s ideas. We take for granted the struggle people had to go through. Somebody along the way had to say, ‘t’s wrong to keep slaves.” It wasn’t even religion, it was justice and equality.

With us, worshiping money, worshiping bodies, it’s wrong. Who is going to stand up and say it is wrong? Who will put the time and effort into telling people that worshiping other than Allah is wrong? But the same thing happened when the black people said, we want to vote. Somebody must step up and say it’s wrong. We all know it’s wrong. They were able to change. Can we do the same thing? We can, we can insha Allah. BUt everybody has to step it up and take it to the next level. Because it’s on everybody’s shoulders now. NAd that is why we are here, saying La ilaha ilalala. That is how the companions were.

During the time of Rasulullah, when the Meccans started to accept Islam, Why did it happen all of a sudden now? Because the Quraysh had been defeated. But now you have a struggle within the Quraysh. Now there is a split, who do we follow?

Whichever group is victorious, we will follow them. When Rasulullah and the Muslims defeated the Quraysh, so many people accepted Islam after that, because this proved that Islam was the right way.

Some of the last tribes, the tried to muster one last stand, no one can stay home, not women, not children, not cows, ntot chickens, not anything. You’re going to fight to the death, because everything is out there ont he battlefield. So they mustered up a very large force, women and children ontop of camels, thousands and thousands of people. The women are all the way in the back on the camels, and the Muslims cant tell the differnce between the women and men, so they think the women on the camels are men.

So they come to the Valley of Hunayn. The Muslims are so strong now, they think nothing can defeat them. But then they see these arrows falling on them now. 9:25 – 26

Two strong Muslims Abu Sufyan, Al Abbas ibn Abdul Muttalib, they strengthen the Muslim troops, some are retreating. So the Muslims, in seeing the bravery of Rasulullah, Abu Sufyan and Al-Abbas, they are reassured.

It was a lesson for them, that victory comes, when Allah (swt) gives you victory. Then they start seeing that most of the crowd is livestock, and then men are actually women in disguise.

So it’s really a great victory when they win, because there were so man spoils. Rasulullah would give 100 camels to this man, 100 camels to that man, and most of them were already rich, but they were new Muslims from Makkah. Some of the youngsters are stunned. “Our swords are still dripping with their blood,” and Rasulullah didnt give them anything.

When Rasulullah eard this, he got up on the minbar, and spoke to the people, are you not satisfied, Oh Ansar, that these people get sheep and camels, but you get to go home with the messenger of Allah?

at hearing this, the ansar started to cry.

Rasulullah said, “I don’t give because I love them, I give to them perhaps because I am trying to protect you from being spoiled”

So the influential people who have now received these spoils of war, they go to their people and tell them, you must accept islam because Rauslullah gives without measure.

So Rasulullah goes back to Medina, and tells the people to make Hajj.

140,000 people, just to make Hajj, or at least were there.

Allah (Swt) revealed Surah An Nasr, The Victory, When you see the people entering the religion in droves…

When Abu bakr hears these ayahs, he cries and cries and cries. people are looking at Abu Bakr, like, why is he crying. It’s because he knows the work is over. Victory has come, and the Prophet has conveyed the message.

Rasulullah, indeed, whatever I have said, let whoever is here, convey this message to whoever is not here. And this is why islam reached us, because they did their job

It is now our duty.

This day, I have perfected your religion for you… 5:3

After this ayah was revealed, nothing relating to rulings was revealed. Meaning, everything that was related to halal and haraam was already revealed.

This was revealed in the day of Arafat, the day that Rasulullah gave the farewell sermon.

Rasulullah became sick, some narrations are because a woman gave him some poisoned meat, and then the meat talked and said, don’t eat me. the woman was killed because another companion ate that meat, and she died from it. a life for a life.

Rasulullah said, he felt the effects of that meat until the day he died.

Aisha (ra) says that Rasulullah started getting headaches, fever. The pain the prophets and messengers go through, is 10 times worse than a normal person. Some of the companions touched the Rasul, he was so hot they had to take the hand off of him, it was so hot. The prophet (saw) was in pain, and one day he came out and he felt a little better.

In the noontime, the prophet stood up, and said, He whom I have ever lashed his back, I offer him my back so that he may avenge himself on me. He whom I have ever blasphemed his honor, here I am offering my honor so that he may avenge himself.”

One of the companions said, the prophet owed three dirhams, because the prophet said he would still love someone even if he owed some money. He just wanted to know the prophet would love him.

Why did Aisha not want her father to lead the prayer? It was because she did not want her father to be in a position of hardhip, because she loved her father. Rasulullah ordered Aisha to tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in leadership, because he has to take it.

One day, when Rasulullah was feeling better, he came to the masjid, with al fadl ibn abbas and ali ibn abi talib.even though they are in prayer, they are making movements because they are excited the prophet is here. Abu Bakr moved back, and allowed the prophet to take over in the first rakaah. From this the ruling of when the main imam comes in, if you are leading, then you can step back and allow the main imam to take over, comes from.

Rasulullah’s fever became increased, and he went to the graveyard, he told the freed slave who was still living with him, and told him, Oh Abu Muwayhiba? Allah has given me the option of lving until the Day of Judgement, or meeting Allah (swt). He chose meeting Allah (swt) because Allah (swt) loved him so much.

Abu Muwayhiba (?) pleaded with him to stay, but Rasulullah said, The higher companionship, the higher companionship

Abu Bakr, when he saw that the fever of the prophet was improving, he got permission to leave for his wife’s house. Abu Bakr hadnt left his side.

Rasulullah was in the room of Aisha. Before that, he still wanted to go see each of his wives, but he was unable to. It shows the justice of Rasulullah.

Rasulullah’s daughter, Fatima, visited him, and she was crying, and the prophet whispered in her ear, and she smiled. He said, “Would you like to be the leader of all the women in paradise?” and she was the first one to pass away of the family of Rasulullah.

One of the last few things that Rasulullah ordered, was salah, salah, salah, and was take care of the women, give them their rights, and take care of them properly.

The pain of the messengers, their pain is exacerbated, so know that the pain of the messengers are far greater than anything we can experience.

When word got out that the prophet had passed away Abu Bakr was in denial. Omar was also in denial and said, he has just gone away for 40 days like Musa. I will cut off the tongue of anyone who says he is dead.

Abu Bakr sees Rasulullah, and says, “O messenger, you are pleasant, in life and in death. and he kissed Rasulullah”

Abu Bakr: “Whoever worshiped Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead. Whoever worships Allah, let him know that Allah is alive and everlasting.”

When this ayah (3:144) was recited, Omar ibn al-Khatab started crying, and crying, because he knew that the prophet had passed away.

One of the sahaba said, I have never witnessed two contrasting days like the day that Rasulullah came to medina, and the day he left us.

When we buried the prophet, our hands were doing it, but our hearts refused to believe he was truly gone.

This was the Seerah. But this was just the beginning. Learn about Rasulullah, learn about the companions, learn about what he did.

If somebody makes fun of the prophet, don’t you ever let them make fun of the prophet. It was just something natural, because he loved the prophet.

Let me tell you something, one last hadith. This companion was from the Aslam tribe. Ka’ab ibn Malik al Aslami. he loved them so much, he spent his days and nights at the doorstep. And he would have water ready whenever the messenger oppened the door.

Rasulullah asked him, don’t you want to get married? He said no, I don’t want to depart from you. I just want to be with you.

he asked him, is there anything, anything at all that you want? Just one thing: I want to be with you in Paradise.

He asked him again. The reply, “I just want to be with you in Paradise, that’s all.”

Look at the answer that he gave, “Oh Rabi’a, If you want to be with me in the hereafter, then help me in this affair, by increasing your sujood.”

We ask Allah to help us learn about him, if we’re to study about him, we should be serious. We ask Allah to make us sincere in seeking knowledge, and may we one day be among the people who are with Rasulullah in Jannah.
